When I purchased and why

I think I purchased this flat around 2016. What really appealed to me was the character of the building. It dates back to 1863 and has the features you would expect from an old Victorian property, particularly the high ceilings.

Although it is a one-bedroom flat, the ceiling height and proportions give it a surprisingly spacious feel, which made it stand out from a lot of the other properties I viewed at the time.

I remember thinking the service charges were a little on the high side but in fairness a lot of the other flats I viewed where the maintenance charges were less had really shabby communal areas and the exteriors looked in a state of disrepair which for me was an instant turn off.

I have to say, this development is really well maintained and because we own the freehold we can make sure none of the management monies are wasted.

What I really love about living here

Although I’ve owned the property since 2016, I’ve actually only lived here for around three or four of those years, as for much of that time I also owned a property in Hampshire with my former partner.

One of the things I’ve appreciated most since living here is the location. It is genuinely town-centre living with the major benefit of having parking, which is not always easy to find.

Despite being so central, the road itself is remarkably quiet. It isn’t used as a thoroughfare, so there is very little passing traffic, which gives you the convenience of being in town without it feeling particularly busy or noisy when you are at home.

Why I am selling.

I’m selling because I’ve decided that I would now like to move to Shaftesbury in North Dorset. It is really a lifestyle and location decision rather than anything to do with the flat itself.

What I’ll miss the most.

I think I’ll miss the combination of convenience and tranquillity the most. Being able to walk into the town centre while still living on a quiet road and having my own parking has been extremely convenient. Again, the character of the Victorian building and the sense of space created by the high ceilings are also things that I think will be difficult to replicate in a more modern property.

For me, the property has always offered an unusual combination: the character and proportions of an older Victorian building, a central location, parking and a surprisingly peaceful setting.

It’s a great flat for someone wanting to be close to everything without feeling as though they are living on a busy town-centre road.
